Does your confidence crumble at closing?
2026-03-09 | 13:42:44

You’re not alone! A survey released by Ownright showed 97% of recent homebuyers in Ontario, who began the homeownership process somewhat confidently, felt their fearlessness fade away because of unclear terms and unexpected costs related to mortgage terms, adjustments and unexpected costs. Why is that?
According to the survey:
- 46% said mortgage terms were the most confusing part of closing
- 37% revealed they felt moderate to significant financial stress due to unclear or unexpected costs
- 39% of new home buyers said they used online resources to understand financial requirements and closing costs.
One could conclude the findings indicate transparency, not just affordability, remains a major hurdle for homebuyers.
Who do homebuyers trust the most?
According to the survey:
- 51% said they trust their lawyer the most for financial clarity during closing
- 22% said they trust mortgage lenders or advisers (let’s change that!)
- 6% said they trust online information
Conclusion:
Buying a home is the biggest financial commitment you will ever make. You need an experienced mortgage professional you can partner with [read: trust] to explain all the ins and outs – and closing costs.
