Now that fall is well under way here are a few things you can do to get ready for the holiday season and the winter ahead.
Check your outside lighting
Now is the time to change any burnt out lamps with compact florescent lamps. You will get better lighting and will save on energy costs. Clean the glass on your fixtures and you will be surprised at the difference it makes. With the shorter days you’ll be glad you did!
Use LED Christmas lights
You will notice a significant energy savings by switching to LED Christmas lights. They use a fraction of the power of conventional lights and with a timer, you will save even more.
Test your outdoor GFCI* receptacles by pressing the test button on them
If they do not trip or do not reset, then it is time to replace them. If your house is at an age that does not have GFCI protection for outdoor receptacles, then you should consider having them installed. GFCI’s provide protection against shock due to moisture or faulty equipment. (*GFCI: Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter)
Change the batteries in your smoke alarms
Change the batteries every fall and spring to coincide with the time change - spring ahead, fall back. If you have hard-wired alarms, be sure to test them. Smoke alarms should be replaced if they are older than 10 years.
A few minutes of maintenance will keep things bright and safe!
