A New Twist on Spring Cleaning

I love Spring time. The snow has melted and the grass is turning green and the buds on the trees are starting to appear. It is a kind of rebirth. It’s a great time to clean and de-clutter! I always feel so much lighter after a de-cluttering session. It’s like losing weight! Your home needs to shed its layers so it can have room to breathe.

Spring is a great time to get rid of dust, dirt and to ensure there is no mold in your home. Allergies can be aggravated by dust and mold, and having dusty open boxes can make you sick, particularly if you are asthmatic. Going through your stuff is vital to your own health as well as your family’s health, not to mention your home’s health! After all, you might decide to sell it one of these days!

Organizing is often about getting rid of the old and making room for the new but it’s also about knowing what you have. Barbara Hemphill, America’s Favorite Professional Organizer says "If you don’t know you have it and you can’t find it, then it’s not doing you any good." This is why so many people actually go out and buy another item instead of struggling to find the one they know they have somewhere.

A lot of people don’t want to start organizing their homes or workplaces because they are too overwhelmed and don’t even know where to begin.

I recommend taking it one step at a time. Don’t try and clean the whole house in one day. Start with the room that is bothering you the most; let’s say your kitchen. Make a list of all the chores that you would like done and when you would like them done by, then decide which ones you can delegate. Your list may look like this:

  • Remove window coverings and wash windows
  • Wipe down outside of cabinet cupboards
  • Go through pantry and throw out expired food. Do this one shelf at a time and wipe down shelves before replacing items you wish to keep
  • Wash floor
  • Pat yourself on the back and realize that you are one step further to achieving your goal of organization.

Now take each room in the house and repeat. Some tasks can be delegated to other family members or to a cleaning service. Perhaps you will hire a company to wash all the windows in your home; that would be one less job for you to worry about. Or you may decide to hire a carpet cleaner to come and clean your rugs. It’s a good idea to have rugs professionally cleaned at least once or twice a year, especially if you have pets.
